The governments of Fiji and the United Arab Emirates formally opened bilateral relations in  a ceremony in New York on 17th March, 2010.  The establishment of bilateral relations between Fiji and the UAE came into force with the signing of a joint communiqué by the two nations’ permanent representatives at the United Nations, H.E. Mr Ahmed Al-Jarman and H.E. Mr Peter Thomson.

The coming into force of bilateral relations follows on from the visit to Fiji in February 2010 of the UAE Foreign Affairs Minister, H.H. Sheik Abdulla Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.  The Cabinet of the Fiji Government endorsed the formal establishment of diplomatic relations in the same month.

The joint communiqué between Fiji and the UAE states that both nations are guided by their willingness to promote mutual understanding and to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

Based upon the purposes of the United Nations Charter, the joint communiqué affirms the respect that both countries have for the principles of equality among States, national sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States.
