The Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations in a ceremony in New York on August 27th. The ceremony was held at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations where joint communiqués between the Governments of the two countries were signed by Ambassador Kanika Phommachanh of the Lao PDR and Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji.

The communiqués set out the agreement of the two countries to establish diplomatic relations in accordance with the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. They express the intent of both countries to promote and strengthen the friendship between the two countries and peoples, and to develop bilateral cooperation.

Ambassador Phommachanh thanked the Fiji Mission for hosting the ceremony and said the Lao People's Democratic Republic was very happy to be able to formalise diplomatic relations with Fiji. She expressed her wish for the Lao and Fiji Missions to work closely together in furthering the work of the United Nations.

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, has been appointed to chair an open-ended working group aimed at increasing Pacific Islands representation in the UN system.  The working group is an initiative of the PSIDS organisation made up of the eleven Pacific Islands Missions to the UN, namely the Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

The working group will examine how Pacific Island countries can gain a fairer share of representation on the many councils, committees and organs of the United Nations.  It will in addition look at means by which citizens of the Pacific Islands can more equitably participate as employees and officials of the United Nations.

Relations between Fiji and Cuba were further strengthened on July 1st, 2010 at a ceremony in Havana.  Fiji’s Ambassador to Cuba, Mr Peter Thomson, presented his letters of credence to Cuba’s Vice-President, Mr Estavan Hernandez, at the Palace of the Revolution in Cuba’s capital.

Following discussions between Vice-President Hernandez and Ambassador Thomson, an Honour Guard of the Cuban Revolutionary Forces was inspected and the Fiji national anthem was played by a military band.  Ambassador Thomson then laid a wreath on behalf of the Government and People of Fiji at the tomb of Jose Marti, Cuba’s hero of independence.

As a State Party to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, Fiji is attending the review conference which was opened on Monday 31 May in Kampala, Uganda is being scheduled for a two-week period.

The Fijian delegation is headed by the Attorney General & Minister for Justice, Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum. He is accompanied by Mr. Luke Daunivalu who is based at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The Government of Fiji’s ongoing drive to formalize diplomatic relations with all Member States of the United Nations, has taken a further step forward during the month of June.

Ceremonies have been held to this effect in New York this month around the signing of communiqués establishing diplomatic relations. Fiji Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, has represented Fiji at these ceremonies along with Second Secretary Esala Nayasi.
