Fiji and Grenada Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Governments of Fiji and Grenada formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York on 23 June 2015. Grenada’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Denis Antoine, and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Fiji's Permanent Representative Visits the United Nations Disengagement Force (UNDOF)

Fiji's UN Peacekeepers serving in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Golan have been doing an excellent job in difficult circumstances. This was confirmed to Fiji's visiting Ambassador by UNDOF's Force Commander Major-General Thapa.

The Commission on Population and Development is underway at the United Nations this week, addressing a theme of “realizing the future we want: integrating population issues into sustainable development, including in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.” This morning, the Commission heard a statement from the Fijian delegation highlighting population issues from Fiji and the Pacific Small Island Developing States.

Group of Friends of Oceans and Seas formed at the United Nations

At the United Nations today, the foundation meeting of the Group of Friends of Oceans and Seas was held. The group is made up of UN Ambassadors dedicated to ensuring the well-being of oceans and seas.

The Permanent Representative of Fiji, Ambassador Peter Thomson, was appointed as one of the group's five Co-Chairs (one for each of the five regional groups of the United Nations). The other Co-Chairs are the Permanent Representatives of Senegal, Estonia, Grenada and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Commander of Fiji Military Forces Completes UN Meetings

The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Brigadier General Tikoitoga, has completed a five-day visit to the United Nations in New York, during which he attended a series of UN Peacekeeping meetings. The Brigadier General concluded his visit by meeting this morning with the Under-Secretary-General of the UN’s Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Mr Herve Ladsous.

The Government of the Republic of Fiji and the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Bulgaria to the United Nations in New York on 25 March 2015. Bulgaria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Stephan Tafrov, and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.

Burundi and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

Head of UN Women and Fijian Minister for Women Discuss Gender-Based Violence

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Rosy Sofia Akbar met today in New York with the Executive Director for UN Women, Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka at the UN Headquarters.
