Fiji Action at United Nations for Enhanced Evaluation

The United Nations General Assembly today adopted a new resolution on ‘Capacity Building for the Evaluation of Development Activities at the Country Level’.The resolution invites the entities of the United Nations development system, with the collaboration of national and international stakeholders, to support efforts to further strengthen the capacity of nations for evaluation of development activities. The Fiji Permanent Mission to the United Nations led the passage of the resolution.

Malta and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Republic of Malta and the Republic of Fiji formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York on 11 December 2014. The Permanent Representative of Malta to the United Nations, Ambassador Christopher Grimaand his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.

PSIDS Call for Sustainable Use of Ocean Resources

The Pacific Small Island Developing States(PSIDS) represented at the United Nations called today for the adoption of General Assembly resolutions on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, and on Sustainable Fisheries. Addressing the UN General Assembly on behalf of the PSIDS, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Peter Thomson, said that oceans and fisheries were at the very heart of the shared identity of PSIDS.

The United Nations General Assembly has today adopted a resolution granting the request for observer status of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community to the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution was originally submitted by the delegation of Fiji in support of the decision taken by the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Pacific Community of which Fiji was the Chair.

Fijian Prime Minister Holds Bilateral Talks with Chinese President

Hon. Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama led bilateral talks with the President of the People's Republic of China, H.E. Xi Jinping at Nadi this morning.

During the bilateral talks, H.E. President Xi congratulated the Fijian Prime Minister on the success of the 2014 Fijian elections. He also commended the Government on achievements in nation building and economic and social developemnt in recent years.

At the United Nations Security Council open debate on Women, Peace and Security in New Yok today, the provision of freedom from unfair discrimination based on sex or gender that it is enshrined in Fiji's 2013 Constitution was extolled. Fiji's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, told the Security Council that Fiji was committed to increasing women's participation in decision-making and in political, social and economic processes at all levels.

Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) are committed to finding genuine and durable solutions so that nuclear weapons are never again used. Speaking on behalf of PSIDS at the United Nations General Assembly today, Fiji's Permanent Representative Ambassador Peter Thomson, called upon nuclear-weapon States to reduce and ultimately eliminate all types of nuclear weapons.

Fiji Day was celebrated in New York today when Fijian diplomats hosted a Fiji Day luncheon at the United Nations. In attendance were seventy Ambassadors from all regions of the world, including members of the Security Council, the President of the Group of 77 and China, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand.
