The Government of the Republic of Fiji and the Government of Antigua and Barbuda formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York on 20 February 2015. The Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations, Ambassador Walton Webson, and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.

The Republic of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Fiji formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York on 6 February, 2015. The Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, Ambassador Vandi Chidi Minah and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.

El Salvador and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Republic of El Salvador and the Republic of Fiji formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York on 30 January 2015. The Charge d’Affaires of El Salvador’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Ruben Armando Escalante Hasbun, and his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.

Handover Ceremony for Presidency of UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS

A ceremonial meeting was held at the United Nations today to mark the handover of the Presidency of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board from Fiji’s Ambassador Peter Thomson to Ambassador Fernando Carrera of Guatemala.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Thomson said it had been a great privilege to lead the Board during the critical preparations for the Post-2015 Development Agenda. He said he was confident that UNDP, UNFPA and UNOPS were fit for purpose for the great development challenges looming ahead.

Fiji Action at United Nations for Enhanced Evaluation

The United Nations General Assembly today adopted a new resolution on ‘Capacity Building for the Evaluation of Development Activities at the Country Level’.The resolution invites the entities of the United Nations development system, with the collaboration of national and international stakeholders, to support efforts to further strengthen the capacity of nations for evaluation of development activities. The Fiji Permanent Mission to the United Nations led the passage of the resolution.

PSIDS Call for Sustainable Use of Ocean Resources

The Pacific Small Island Developing States(PSIDS) represented at the United Nations called today for the adoption of General Assembly resolutions on Oceans and the Law of the Sea, and on Sustainable Fisheries. Addressing the UN General Assembly on behalf of the PSIDS, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Peter Thomson, said that oceans and fisheries were at the very heart of the shared identity of PSIDS.

UN General Assembly adopts resolution on the granting of Observer Status to Secretariat of Pacific Community

The United Nations General Assembly has today adopted a resolution granting the request for observer status of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community to the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution was originally submitted by the delegation of Fiji in support of the decision taken by the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Pacific Community of which Fiji was the Chair.
