Foreign Ministers from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji, Senator Bob Carr, the Hon Murray McCully and Ratu Inoke Kubuabola today continued trilateral discussions in New York, where they are participating in the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting was held at Fiji’s Mission to the United Nations.

SIDS Conference in Barbados on Sustainable Energy and the Rio+20 Process

Fiji was represented at two important SIDS meetings in Barbados this week in the lead-up to next month's Rio+20 conference on Sustainable Development. The Barbados meetings were specifically held to address the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The first was the 7-8 May SIDS Conference on Sustainable Energy, and the second, held on 9 May, was an informal SIDS Ministerial Meeting on Sustainable Development.

Permanent Representative Visits Iraq and Kuwait

Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, has returned to New York from a week’s visit to Kuwait and Iraq.  He travelled to Kuwait as a guest of the Kuwait Government in a delegation of UN Ambassadors from developing countries.  In addition to meetings with the Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UN Ambassadors met with the boards of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, the Kuwait Diplomatic Institute, the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation and the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Fiji Diplomat Appointed to Climate Change Adaptation Committee

Mr Luke Daunivalu, Counsellor at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations, has been selected as the AOSIS nominee to the UNFCCC’s Adaptation Committee. The Adaptation Committee is one of the newly established bodies under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Fiji Ambassador Calls for Greater Commitment to Women's Empowerment

In New York this week, Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson, called for greater concern and commitment at the United Nations for gender equality and women’s empowerment. 

Ambassador Thomson was speaking as one of the three panelists on a side-event organised by Iraq in the context of the Commission on the Status of Women currently underway in New York.  The other two panelists were the UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, and the Executive Director of UN Women, Ms Michelle Bachelet.
