PSIDS Call for Greater Regional Attention to Women's Empowerment

At the United Nations today, the Pacific Small Islands Developing States (PSIDS) called for greater attention to women’s empowerment in their region.  The PSIDS statement was delivered to the 58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) by Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson.

Fiji’s Ambassador-at-Large, Major General Ioane Naivalurua has completed a week’s visit to New York focussed on UN peacekeeping activities.  He led the Fiji delegation to the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations that began its 2014 session in New York this week.

Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations Begins 2014 Session

The annual session of the United Nations Special Committee on Peacekeeping Operations commenced in New York this morning.  The Permanent Representative of Nigeria, Ambassador Joy Ogwu, was re-elected as Chair of the Special Committee.

Kyrgyzstan and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York on 14 February 2014. The Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyzstan to the United Nations, Ambassador Talaibek Kydyrov, and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Fiji Chairs Joint Meeting of Executive Boards of UN System

The 2014 joint meeting of the executive boards of UNDP, UNFPA, UNOPS, UNICEF, UN-Women and WFP met in New York today.  The annual joint meeting is convened to enable the major UN funds and programme to enhance coherence in their work.  The afternoon session of the joint meeting was chaired by Fiji's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Peter Thomson.

Lithuania and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York on 24 January 2014. The Permanent Representative of the Lithuania to the United Nations, Ambassador Raimonda Murmokaite, and her Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The Plurinational State of Bolivia and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York today. At the ceremony, Bolivia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Sasha Llorentty, and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.

Fiji's Minister of Foreign Affairs Passes the G77 Torch to the President of Bolivia

At a ceremonial meeting at the United Nations in New York today, Fiji’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, handed over the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China to Bolivia’s Head of State, President Evo Morales Ayma.  Bolivia will now Chair the 133-member G77 for the duration of 2014, taking over from a Fiji leadership role that began in January 2013.
