Fiji's Minister of Foreign Affairs Passes the G77 Torch to the President of Bolivia

At a ceremonial meeting at the United Nations in New York today, Fiji’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, handed over the Chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China to Bolivia’s Head of State, President Evo Morales Ayma.  Bolivia will now Chair the 133-member G77 for the duration of 2014, taking over from a Fiji leadership role that began in January 2013.

The General Assembly of the United Nations met this morning in a special event to honour the life and memory of the late President Nelson Mandela.  Speakers included the President of the General Assembly, Mr John Ashe, the UN Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, the former Mayor of New York, Mr David Dinkins, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu by video from South Africa.  Fiji's Ambassador Peter Thomson led the speakers from the floor of the General Assembly, speaking in Fiji's capacity as Chairman of the 133-member Group of 77 and China.

Ambassadors of the Group of 77 and China gathered in New York today for their last formal meeting at the United Nations in 2013.  The meeting of the ambassadors of the 133  member states of the world’s developing countries was attended by the President of the General Assembly, Ambassador John Ashe, and the UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson.

The Government of Burkina Faso and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York on 22 November 2013. The Permanent Representative of Burkina Faso to the United Nations, Ambassador Der Kogda and his Fijian counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed the joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.
