Fiji Speaks at Debate on General and Complete Disarmament

Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) are committed to finding genuine and durable solutions so that nuclear weapons are never again used. Speaking on behalf of PSIDS at the United Nations General Assembly today, Fiji's Permanent Representative Ambassador Peter Thomson, called upon nuclear-weapon States to reduce and ultimately eliminate all types of nuclear weapons.

Fiji Day Celebrated at the United Nations

Fiji Day was celebrated in New York today when Fijian diplomats hosted a Fiji Day luncheon at the United Nations. In attendance were seventy Ambassadors from all regions of the world, including members of the Security Council, the President of the Group of 77 and China, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand.

Russia and Fiji Bilateral Meeting

Fijian Prime Minister, Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, held a bilateral meeting today at the United Nations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Minister Lavrov warmly congratulated the Prime Minister for the successful completion of the Fiji general elections and for the Prime Minister's victory. Prime Minister Bainimarama thanked Russia for its most helpful participation in the Multinational Observer Group that oversaw the Fiji elections.

China and Fiji Bilateral Meeting

The Foreign Ministers of China and Fiji held a bilateral meeting at the UN Headquarters today. At the meeting, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi congratulated Fiji on the successful conclusion of national elections and the formation of the new government.

Fijian Foreign Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola thanked China for its steadfast support in recent years and for its financial assistance towards the holding of the elections.

Prime Minister Bainimarama Meets Secretary General Ban Ki-moon

Fiji's Prime Minister Hon. Voreqe Bainimarama met at the United Nations today with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The Secretary General warmly congratulated Fiji's Prime Minister for the successful completion of the recent Fiji general elections, and for Fiji's people choosing him to lead the nation.

Mr. Ban congratulated Fiji for the free, fair, and democratic manner in which the elections were conducted.

Prime Minister Bainimarama-Statement to the Nation on the Release of Fijian Peacekeepers

My fellow Fijians,

I’m delighted to announce to the nation that the 45 Fijian peacekeepers being detained in Syria have been released unharmed. They are now safely back in a United Nations compound, they are all healthy, they are in high spirits and they will soon be in contact with their families and loved ones here in Fiji.

Our men will need to be debriefed and they obviously deserve a period of rest before they return to their duties, but I know that they are all keen to continue their mission.

Niger and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

The Republic of Niger and the Republic of Fiji formalized diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York on 9 September, 2014. The Permanent Representative of Niger to the United Nations, AmbassadorBoubacarBoureimaand his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two States.
