The Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Fiji formalised diplomatic relations at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York on 15th March, 2013. The Permanent Representative of the Cyprus to the United Nations, Ambassador Nicholas Emiliou and his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two island nations.

In its capacity as Chair of the Group of 77 and China, Fiji today presented the Group’s position on ECOSOC reforms.  Speaking in the ECOSOC Chamber in New York this morning, Fiji’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Peter Thomson, said that the relevance and effectiveness of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) has diminished over the years.  He called for a new transformational vision to be brought to ECOSOC to restore and enhance its relevance.

Fiji Elected to Chair the Group of 77 & China

Fiji has been elected to Chair the Group of 77 and China for the duration of 2013.  The election took place by acclamation at today’s G77 Ministerial Meeting in New York, following the nomination of Fiji by the Asia-Pacific Group of the United Nations. With 132 Member States, the G77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations.
