Prime Minister Bainimarama Continues Visit to the United Nations as Chair of the Group of 77 and China

Fiji’s Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, continued with meetings at the UN today in his role as Chair of the Group of 77 and China. This morning he attended the Special High Level Meeting of ECOSOC on External Debt Sustainability and Development. The meeting is addressing lessons learned from debt crises and ongoing work on sovereign debt restructuring and debt resolution mechanisms.

In his capacity as Chair of the Group of 77 and China, Fiji’s Prime Minister, Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, today attended the Special High Level Meeting of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) with the Bretton Woods Institutions, the World Trade Organization, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

Saint Vincent and Fiji Establish Diplomatic Relations

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines formalized diplomatic relations with the Republic of Fiji at a ceremony at the Fiji Mission to the United Nations in New York on 15th April, 2013. The Permanent Representative of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to the United Nations, Ambassador Camillo Gonsalves and his Fiji counterpart, Ambassador Peter Thomson, signed a joint communiqué establishing diplomatic relations between the two island nations.

China G77 Meeting on Climate Change

The Chair of the Group of 77 Ambassador Peter Thomson met today with Vice Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission of China Mr. Xie Zhenhua, to discuss the multilateral process of UNFCCC climate change negotiations and related matters. Mr. Xie is in New York to meet with the UN Secretary-General and key stakeholders including the G77 to discuss the year’s work programme of climate change negotiations.

In its capacity as Chair of the Group of 77 and China, Fiji today presented the Group’s position on ECOSOC reforms.  Speaking in the ECOSOC Chamber in New York this morning, Fiji’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Peter Thomson, said that the relevance and effectiveness of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) has diminished over the years.  He called for a new transformational vision to be brought to ECOSOC to restore and enhance its relevance.
