Ladies and Gentlemen.

 

Bula vinaka and a very good morning to you all. I stand before you as the leader of the first nation in the world to have approved the ratification of the Paris Agreement and to lodge the ratification instruments.

I also stand before you as the leader of a nation that has been among the first since Paris to experience the full force of an extreme weather event attributed to climate change.

Tropical Cyclone Winston has moved far to the west of our shores and is a lot weaker than it was when it hit Fiji.  However, we are still experiencing heavy rain throughout our islands, and should remain on high alert for flooding in low-lying areas.

My fellow Fijians,

Yesterday, Tropical Cyclone Winston – the most devastating storm on record in the Southern Hemisphere -- reached our shores. The damage has been widespread. Homes have been destroyed, many low-lying areas have flooded and many people have been left stunned and confused about what to do.

Speech delivered by the Prime Minister Hon. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama at the official commissioning of the Naitutu Electrification project at Namena village, Tailevu.
